Speaking to ComicBook.com recently, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that he’d be on board for a reboot of one of his most successful and beloved Disney adventure franchises, “Pirates of the Caribbean,” which has grossed over $4.5 billion across five movies. Speaking of his hit franchises’ future, among them the “Top Gun” series with Tom Cruise, Bruckheimer said it’s unclear “how projects come together.

Bruckheimer intimated the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” film will likely see a clean break with an all-new cast, effectively signaling that Johnny Depp will not return as Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp has been in the franchise. Word didn’t first filter out on any Pirates projects Disney had in development until deep into 2020. A reboot series with Margot Robbie and a sixth film of the original series, written by Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott.

Mazin trolled a script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” as “an original story,” per Disney, which shocked even the studio’s executives. Meanwhile, in November 2022, Robbie revealed that her “Pirates” project, said to take a fresh narrative approach, had been put on pause.

Bruckheimer made it clear that Robbie’s script may resurface at some point, but otherwise, he indicated that the studio was very much prioritizing Mazin and Elliot. Naturally, the two are keeping the details of their “Pirates” movie a closely guarded secret, leading to persistent rumors about Depp’s potential return.

As for Depp’s involvement, it remained hanging in the balance, yet Bruckheimer has faith in a “Pirates” reboot still being alive on his cards. Its previous films in the franchise belonged to box office juggernauts, whereby two of its films had raced past the $1 billion mark at the global take.
